Almost nobody can tell a Heesen from a Benetti at 200 meters, and there is no reason you should. From the dock they are both large, white and beautifully kept. Charter yacht builders fall into four tiers: production, premium production, semi-custom and full custom. The tier, not the badge, decides hull material, hull form and layout, and those decide your week.
Some yards build for distance. Some build for anchoring, swimming and long lunches. Some build for speed between two ports, and a few build one boat at a time for one family. Below, every brand gets a personality, the car or fashion house we think it resembles, and a yacht of ours you can book.
Quick answer
- Lagoon and Sunreef: level, shallow, sociable. Catamarans that do not heel, so nobody is seasick on a tilted floor.
- Azimut and Sunseeker: the badges you already recognize. Deck space and pace at a price a production hull can reach.
- Riva: the shape people know before the name. Book one when the boat has to look considered in every photograph.
- Benetti and Sanlorenzo: unhurried, formal, comfortable. Displacement hulls that hold 12 knots without drama, built around sofas and dining tables.
- Heesen: the fast one. A hull that turns a 150 mile leg into an afternoon rather than a night passage.
- Feadship and Lurssen: made to measure, and made once. Full custom steel at 60 meters and up, and the quietest nights we have slept through.

| Mangusta | Premium production | Italy | Waterjets, shoal draft, open | Moncler | No propellers, so she can lie close in over sand |
| Sunreef | Production to custom | Poland | Custom catamaran, superyacht volume | Balmain | Catamaran stability with a full beam master and private crew |
| Lagoon | Production | France | Level, roomy, family first | Range Rover, long wheelbase | No heeling and 1.2m of draft, so shallow bays open up |
| Fountaine Pajot | Production | France | Lighter hulls, better under sail | Lotus Emira | Finer hulls that genuinely sail, so engines stay off longer |
| Bali | Production | France | Open plan, indoor outdoor | Ferrari Roma Spider, roof down | A tilting aft bulkhead, so saloon and cockpit become one room |
| Beneteau | Production | France | The archetype everyone knows | Burberry’s trench | Goes upwind properly, for a week where the passage is the point |
Production yards: the fleet you step onto most weeks
This is the tier most guests actually step onto. Series built composite hulls, bought as a model and run by a fleet operator. A Lagoon, a Bali, a Fountaine Pajot, a Beneteau or a Sunreef is behind most charter weeks under 30 meters.
Lagoon: the level, shallow, family catamaran
Our Range Rover, long wheelbase: drawn around the family living aboard, not around the helm. Lagoon passed its 7,000th catamaran in 2024.
- A Lagoon does not heel, so nobody eats breakfast on a tilted floor.
- A Lagoon draws about 1.2m, which opens bays a monohull cannot enter.
Ours: we book AEOLUS 77, a 23 meter 2024 Lagoon in the BVI from USD 84,000 a week, for families who want the shallow anchorages.
Sunreef: catamaran comfort at superyacht volume
Catamaran stability, a full beam master, a private crew, and no heel. Sunreef launched the first oceangoing luxury catamaran with a flybridge in 2003. To our eye the brand is Balmain: bold, high shine, unmistakably styled.
- Every Sunreef hull is custom, so read the layout and not the model name.
- A Sunreef puts superyacht volume on two hulls, which is a lot of deck.
Ours: NAUTI NICKEL is a 24 meter 2022 Sunreef in the BVI from USD 112,000 a week, and her toy selection is rare on a catamaran.
Beneteau: the sailing monohull everyone has been on
Burberry’s trench, to our eye: the original everyone else has copied since 1884. Beneteau is the reference sailing monohull, and the reason most people who have sailed have sailed on one.
- A Beneteau Oceanis goes upwind properly, which a charter catamaran will not.
- A Beneteau has one hull, so one shared space and a deeper draft than a cat.
Ours: for a week where the passage is the point we book SERENA, a 19 meter 2017 Beneteau, from USD 22,500 a week.
Premium production: the badge tier most clients already recognize
Azimut: the most outdoor deck for the money
Our Zegna: Milanese, tailored, consistent from the smallest hull to the largest. Azimut runs seven series, from a 42 foot sport boat to a 44 meter flagship.
- An Azimut gives you wide beam, big flybridges and a lot of glass.
- Azimut’s planing hulls suit short legs, and Magellano is the long range line.
Ours: VOLO MARE is a 38 meter 2023 Azimut in the Ionian from EUR 150,000 a week, and we put guests who live outside on her.
Sunseeker: the deep V that handles a head sea
We keep AQUA LIBRA in mind for a week with wind in it. She is a 40 meter 2018 Sunseeker in Greece from EUR 145,000 a week, and her varnished wood and white marble are beautifully kept. The yard reads as an Aston Martin DB: British, quick, dressed for dinner.
- Sunseeker’s deep V slices a head sea where a flatter hull pounds.
- Sunseeker cockpits are built for socializing, with leather and dark wood below.
Riva: the shape people recognize before the name
Our Jaguar E-Type: a shape people know before they read the badge. Riva built the mahogany Aquarama from 1962 to 1996, and the modern range keeps the instinct: low, polished, open.
- A Riva puts the cockpit and sunpad at the center, so the day runs on swimming and lunch.
- At 33 meters a Riva flybridge cruises and overnights properly, which the old runabouts never did.
Ours: BELLA DONNA is a 33 meter 2025 Riva in Sicily from EUR 128,000 a week. She is the newest boat named in this article.
Semi-custom superyachts: built one hull at a time
This is the tier where a yard’s character finally shows. Steel, aluminum or heavy composite, 30 to 70 meters, one hull at a time, so two boats from one yard can feel like two decisions.
Benetti: unhurried displacement, built around rooms
Our Rolls-Royce Phantom: serene and generous, with interiors treated as rooms, not cabins. Benetti has built in Viareggio since 1873.
- A Benetti’s full displacement hull holds 12 knots and does not punish you in chop.
- On Benetti’s Oasis and B.Now models, fold-out wings widen the aft deck into a sea terrace.
Ours: we book ALEXANDRA, a 50 meter Benetti in Greece from EUR 180,000 a week, when guests want the Hellenic theme nights.
Sanlorenzo: one strong architectural idea per boat
Sanlorenzo deletes what other yards keep. Its asymmetric SL102A dropped the port side deck altogether to win interior volume. To our eye Sanlorenzo is The Row: minimal, architectural, one strong idea per boat.
- A Sanlorenzo interior reads Milanese rather than nautical: pale wood, clean lines, art.
- Sanlorenzo’s asymmetric and SX layouts show you the water from the sofa, not from a corridor.
Ours: K2, a 36 meter 2024 Sanlorenzo in the Ionian, from EUR 150,000 a week.
Heesen: aluminum speed that costs you no comfort
Our Porsche 911 GT3: aluminum, quick through engineering rather than size. Heesen pushed Octopussy past 53 knots in 1988, and its Fast Displacement Hull Form is the modern signature.
- A Heesen holds high 20s to 30 knots, which turns a 150 mile leg into an afternoon.
- Heesen’s hull suppresses motion, so the pace costs little comfort.
Ours: SOUTH is a 55 meter 2012 Heesen in the Bahamas, from USD 320,000 a week.
Perini Navi: a big rig a small crew can handle
Ralph Lauren, to our eye: the sailing yacht image itself, masts as the aesthetic. Perini Navi pioneered the powered furling that lets a small crew handle a big rig.
- Perini’s furling means the crew handles the rig and guests never touch a line.
- A big Perini ketch heels gently under sail, with no engine noise.
Ours: we sail BARACUDA VALLETTA, a 50 meter 2009 Perini Navi, from Venice to the Aegean from EUR 185,000 a week.
The top of the market: full custom, one hull from a blank page
Here there is no model to choose. No model range, no published spec, and motion engineered to a contractual number. Our guide to what 60 to 70 meters buys goes deeper.
Feadship: no model range, only named hulls
The Dior atelier, to our eye: measured, fitted, made once. Feadship has no model range at all, only named hulls, across more than 500 yachts.
- A Feadship’s deck layout is drawn for one family, so nothing about it is a compromise.
- Feadship engineers noise and vibration to a contractual number, not to chance.
Ours: PEGASUS is a 53 meter 1997 Feadship in Greece, from USD 250,000 a week in April and May and USD 275,000 from 1 June to 30 August.
Lurssen: the scale that holds a schedule
CORAL OCEAN is the one we reach for first here: 73 meters, a 1994 Lurssen, from EUR 650,000 a week on the Riviera in summer, with a main deck gym open to the outdoors. The yard reads as Mercedes-Maybach: building since 1875, with a depth few yards match above 80 meters.
- Above 90 meters a Lurssen’s motion is slow and long, so a crossing keeps to schedule.
- A Lurssen’s guest areas work like floors of a building, the crew world unseen.
Abeking & Rasmussen: naval-grade quiet and finish
Jil Sander, to our eye: German, restrained, obsessively finished. Abeking & Rasmussen has built since 1907, and puts minehunters and research vessels through the same sheds. That is where the quiet reputation comes from.
- Abeking’s reputation rests on how low it keeps the noise floor underway.
- Abeking deck layouts favor real seagoing use, with side decks sheltered enough to use.
Ours: VERA, a 52 meter 2000 Abeking & Rasmussen in the Aegean, from EUR 210,000 a week.
What matters more than the yacht brand: tier, hull and layout
Tier decides more than badge. A Lagoon and a Feadship are both beautifully built, and they are built for different weeks. What matters is hull material, hull form and layout, and those follow the tier, not the name on the transom.
Broker insight
Clients ask me which builder is best, and I always turn the question around. The badge on the transom is not what you remember. It is the second morning, when you realize you slept straight through because the hull barely moved and you never once heard a generator. I worked on board these yachts for years before I started booking them, so tell me how you want the week to feel and I will tell you which yard built for it.

People also ask
Does it matter which builder my charter yacht is from?
The brand matters less than the tier and the individual boat. Two yachts of the same length can differ by several knots of cruising speed, a meter of draft and a whole deck of living space.
Benetti vs Heesen: what is the difference?
Benetti builds warm displacement yachts for unhurried weeks at anchor. Heesen builds fast aluminum hulls for distance. A Benetti holds 12 knots in comfort, a Heesen can hold high 20s, which changes what an itinerary can include.
Which yacht builder is best?
Best depends on the week. For silence, compare the Dutch and German full custom yards. For Italian interiors, Sanlorenzo, Riva and CRN. For families and shallow bays, a catamaran from Lagoon, Bali or Sunreef.
You do not need to memorize every shipyard in Europe to book well. Tell us how the week should feel and we will name the yard before the boat. Compare every brand in our builder index, or start with superyacht charter.
