Name: Marte Ryan
Nationality: Norwegian
Position: Chef
Position details: Chef/Stewardess
Languages: Not specified
Description: Languages: Norwegian, English.
Marte grew up visiting the Helgeland coast, where the family farm remains an important part of her life. Food, seasonality and a close connection to the land have always been part of her world, and they shape the way she cooks and hosts on board Nordvær today.
Her cooking is rooted in the ingredients and traditions of Northern Norway but is never constrained by them. She works closely with local farmers, fishermen and producers, building menus around what is in season and what can be found along the journey. Homemade bread, local seafood, berries, herbs and vegetables from the islands bring the landscape onto the table.
Away from the galley, Marte is an experienced kayaker, skier and lifelong lover of the outdoors. As a host, she brings the same care and attention to detail to every aspect of the guest experience. Together with Eric, she has built Nordvær around the way they themselves like to travel: at their own pace, with good food, good company and the freedom to follow wherever the day brings them.
Name: Eric Ryan
Nationality: American
Position: Captain
Position details:
Languages: Not specified
Description: Languages: English, Norwegian, minimal German.
Eric grew up in Alaska and first came to Norway at sixteen, when he moved to the west coast to attend high school. What began as an adventure became home, and he has spent much of his adult life exploring Norway’s mountains, islands and coastline.
A geologist by training, Eric holds a PhD from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and has a particular fascination with how landscapes are formed. He is also an experienced professional skipper, with thousands of hours at sea and a lifetime spent exploring Arctic waters.
On board Nordvær, Eric is just as happy discussing the geology of the mountains rising from the sea as he is finding a quiet anchorage, heading ashore for a hike or taking guests fishing. His curiosity about the natural world shapes every journey. For Eric, exploring Helgeland is about more than discovering beautiful places. It’s about understanding the landscape, the people and the stories that make this coastline unique.
