Captain: Doug Fairfield

Capt. Doug and Chef Valerie offer the perfect blend of warmth, hospitality and adventure. A husband and wife team from South Africa, with many years combined cruising, travel and charter experience. To date, Doug and Val have successfully completed over 200 charters in the Caribbean making them one of the most experienced charter crew in the region.

Doug holds a Yachtmaster Offshore Qualification, reinforced with many ocean crossings and coastal voyages. Doug started sailing in his mid twenties, based off the east coast of South Africa, where sailing and weather conditions are notoriously unpredictable and the coastline hazardous. Having grown up on the ocean with surfing, free diving, spear fishing, scuba diving, sailing and yacht racing as his main activities; sailing charters was a natural progression for him. Weekends were occupied with local and coastal racing as well as family sailing with the children. In 1995, in pursuit of our joint ambition to travel to remote places, we left on an extended 6 year cruise aboard our 30 foot yacht together with our two children, then 4 and 6 years old. This adventure took us across the Indian Ocean and back to South Africa, and then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. During our cruising years we explored remote archipelagos, traveled by yacht many miles up the Amazon River, visited new and unique places, experienced diverse cultures and were exposed to many and varied challenges and opportunities. In 2012, the urge to travel again resulted in the acquisition of Katlyn, our first catamaran, and once again we set off across the Atlantic from Cape Town, spending a year en route, before establishing ourselves in the charter industry in the Caribbean. Along the way we have redeveloped our awareness, appreciation and respect for the ocean, the sky and the weather in all its diversity. In 2018, we upgraded and purchased Gambit, our current charter catamaran, and brought her 4500nm from Italy to the Caribbean.

Doug has been an avid adventure, sport enthusiast throughout his life. After several years of service in a special forces airborne unit, he became involved in Skydiving. He is an advanced skydiver with 2500 jumps, competed on a national level and was the chief instructor at his skydive club prior to his involvement with sailing; he is an experienced paraglider, loves scuba and free diving, as well as water and snow skiing and has completed a number of arduous long distance marathons. He is a natural storyteller and entertainer with a great sense of humor, a charismatic and attentive host, willing to go the extra mile to ensure you get the most out of your vacation whilst ensuring your privacy when appropriate.

Val grew up on a vast dairy farm in the Drakensberg farming district of South Africa, and attended boarding school, before qualifying as a private secretary and then a primary school teacher. She traded horse riding and hiking for sailing, and was perfectly positioned to home school the children while cruising. She is a qualified scuba diver, and enjoys snorkeling, skiing and hiking, and living the island life. She takes pride and pleasure in creating inviting spaces through tasteful choice and use of fabrics and decor, and is an accomplished seamstress. This is evident in the decor aboard Gambit. Many years of monohull sailing and galley responsibilities have enabled her to become a competent and creative chef aboard, fine tuned by various short courses in the culinary arts and bolstered with hundreds of satisfied charter guests.

Doug and Val have a passion for traveling and a special affinity for the African bush, it’s wildlife, beauty, solitude and wide open spaces, and have been fortunate to do an extended three month 4x4 camping safari with roof top tent through some of the most unspoiled and rugged areas of Southern Africa. The freedom of traveling without boundaries inspired a six week camper van tour of New Zealand, wild camping without the constraints of official campsites in the winter wonderland of mountains and fjords. During this time we took the opportunity to try our hand at dog sledding, abseiling and caving. We have spent a month touring Sri Lanka traveling by train and staying in local B&B’s, visited Egypt and driven off the beaten track through the Western Desert, camping in the splendor of the White Desert en route. We have driven across the USA and would love to follow this up with a longer RV trip in the not to distant future.
After 17 years of sailing together, we team up on deck to offer you a fun filled sailing vacation, and when the anchor is down, a companionable, relaxed yet attentive atmosphere is created for you to escape your normal routine and create memories which will live with you forever.

We would love the opportunity to extend a warm welcome to you in the BVI, offer you our hospitality aboard Gambit, and show you around some of our lovely anchorages and must see spots that we’ve come to call home.

Crew are fully vaccinated for Covid 19.

Menu

********

Meal times are always a significant aspect of any vacation!

On Gambit we aim to provide our guests with attractive meals

which are both appetizing and nutritious, whilst accommodating your

dietary requirements, likes and dislikes as best we can. We focus on preparing

meals using a combination of locally obtained produce such as fresh fish,

chicken, meat, tropical fruit and vegetables, rather than importing exotic

ingredients and out of season foodstuffs. We serve breakfast, a light lunch

and dinner in the cockpit or at the saloon table, with chilled water,

fruit juice, tea or coffee to accompany it.

In addition we have our ‘Captains Bar’,  providing you with that perfect glass of

chilled wine, a cold beer or soda, a selection of standard spirits and

mixers, or a sundowner cocktail.

Doug, Val and Gambit ~ While our week has come to a close, the memories will last a lifetime. You are two very special people with the gift of making everyone feel comfortable and welcome aboard Gambit. We have waited a long time to share this experience with our children, and it was perfect. From diving, snorkeling, cliff jumping, the swim thru, tubing, paddle boards and kayaks to our land adventures it was all amazing. It was very special to be able to include my parents as well, I know this is not something they would have done on their own. Covid concerns drift away
With the challenges of covid and apprehension palpable in seven travelers, our broker Lynne and especially our Captain Doug calmed nerves and showed us the path to enter the BVI, even as it changed often. Once we boarded, a sense of calm came over us all. During our week we enjoyed many great meals which Val prepared, as well as island drinks prepared by Doug. We roamed from Tortola to Peter to Norman to Jost and little Jost, through the Dogs to Virgin Gorda and Anegada. Every island afforded us new adventures above and below the water. Soggy is always a favorite, as was Anegada lobsters. Driving a moke on the wrong side of the road wasn't too scary. Various snorkeling sites and tubing gave the kids great adventures. Doug and Val will provide you an adventure to remember. Determine your 'wants' and Doug and Val will craft you week ~ Matt
Great Expectations
A trip to the islands brings great expectations. You have exceeded all expectations. For the last week we have been living in paradise and this all thanks to you. We all so appreciate how concerned you were about fulfilling every need and asking if we were happy. The meals were exceptional and the diving beyond compare! This was a vacation we'll be talking about for the rest of our lives. Thank you for a trip to treasure and remember ~ Cady & Jerry

It was our 3rd BVI trip. All have been memorable but you went above and beyond. Believe me when I say we noticed all the 'behind-the-scenes' hard work and 'extras'. Doug, thank you for getting me out of my comfort zone and taking me diving ~ Robert, Joseph, Reggie & Wendy

A Gra'n'd trip by the Grad family
Letter to the broker ~ "We could not be happier with your recommendation of team Gambit/Doug and Val. Early on in our selection process, you stated that I should first find a crew with bio's that seemed to be a fit with what we were looking for, and then secondly, see if we liked the boat. That was absolutely the best travel advice ever. When I selected Doug and Val at your suggestion, I really didn't yet understand how excellent your guidance was.

They are the ultimate hosts/experts to host a yacht vacation. Their easy warm style, great conversation and communication, sense of humor, world travel experience, nautical knowledge, bartending and culinary skills were all truly exceptional and exceeded our expectations. My family was just blown away every day of this trip.

Doug did a great job manuevering bad weather and managed to find the perfect and interesting anchorages every single day. He's happy to share his marine knowledge both above and below sea level and always has a great story to tell. What an interesting guy! We could have talked with him non-stop for weeks!

Val is a gem. While she comes across as quiet and unassuming, she was quick to get in on our family jokes and humor and truly helped take things to a whole other level that our gang will not soon forget. She works hard in the tiniest galley preparing thoughtful, well presented gourment food without it being too fancy. It was a real treat to be surprised everyday with the question and answer of "Gee.....What do you think she's making for lunch or dinner?" My family and I are real foodies and truly appreciated the labor of love she put into each meal. The whole food and dining experience was simply sophisticated and far exceeded our expectations.

I could go on and on raving about this trip. Simply a perfect 10. We can't wait to sail with Doug and Val again, and thanks for your terrific guidance and answering my dozens of questions. It was the most memorable birthday for me! ~ Marc

What a fabulous & unforgettable trip ~ certainly made turning "60" a lot easier. We will treasure the memories we've made until we meet again! Much love, Myriam, Marc, Max, Mara, Stuie & Judy

You guys were the most fun ever - both are you are now part of the memories that will last forever ~ Stuie

Paul, Annika, Bill & Jen explore the Grenadines
We have had an absolutely fantastic four days on your lovely boat. A big big thank you from each of us for fabulous food, sailing, snorkeling, fun, knowledge and games. We've really appreciated your attention to detail, gracious hosting and the wealth of knowledge you have passed on.
July 2018
The boat is extremely luxurious and beautifully outfitted and decorated. Bedrooms are roomy and peaceful, bathrooms modern and pretty. The boat is beautiful under sail. The communal areas are huge - plenty of space to relax without crowding and so much deck space for everyone to choose their favorite nook.
The meals were truly restaurant quality-delicious and beautifully presented - with wines to compliment. Afternoon cocktails would appear miraculously after a day of snorkeling and exploring little bays and coves.
But by far the best part of chartering Gambit was the wonderful duo of captain/first mate- Doug and Val. Two fine sailors and hosts who really care about the sort of vacation their guests have.
They listened to our needs and wants and tailored the most wonderful week of watery fun filled activities and sights- knowing that we wanted to do nothing more than relax with our families and have lots of new experiences.

They planned each day with us the night before - and gave us the time to do nothing if that's what we wanted - plus their stories of life on the sea were entrancing and we shared many a laugh with these wonderfully easy going South Africans.

My family and I would vacation on the Gambit again - and plan to !

Third time was a charm! After two previous boat cancelled, you saved the day, and how lucky we are that you did! When we thought about returning to Katlyn in March 2017 to explore the new area Doug and Val are sailing - the BVIs - we all agreed that this time we'd have to stay longer and hence booked without a minute of hesitation a two-weeks cruise with them. And again, and even more, we felt at home the moment Doug picked us up at the airport. Again, we spent the most wonderful and relaxed days on board - being active with swimming, snorkling, stand-up paddling and going for hikes, but also being lazy on board, having drinks together and of course enjoying again all the awesome meals that lovely Val prepared for us. We loved to sit together in the evenings to chat and listen to the stories Doug and Val could tell from their long sailing and travelling experience and truly felt like staying with friends. After two weeks it was even harder to say goodbye than the first time, but we'll always cherish the wonderful memories of this amazing time and keep all of it deep in our hearts.
Sailing the Caribbean with Doug and Val is a great holiday experience that is impossible to match!

As an almost full-time traveler, this has been a trip of a lifetime for me! It was made so by the excellent personalities of the crew - Val and Doug Fairfield. They are self motivated to make your charter a very successful one! You cannot find better people to work with!

Doug emphasizes safety measures, leads various hikes, and keeps up on various ships maintenance work. Val's meals are done from scratch and are very tasty. The boat is in outstanding shape.

Words cannot begin to express what a beautiful, marvelous time we had aboard Katlyn! The food was superb (thank you Val), the drinks were always flowing (thank you Doug). All of us were for the first time on a catamaran cruise and for the first time in the Caribbean when we first boarded Katlyn in April 2015 - and we were completely and utterly overwhelmed. Not only by the outstanding natural beauty of the Grenadine islands, but also by the kind, personal and in every respect exceptional hospitality of our lovely hosts Doug and Val, who made us feel at home from the very first minute and made every day another day in paradise! Each day, Doug untiringly selected most beautiful islands and beaches for us to explore, took us to mindblowing snorkling spots (we'll never, never forget Tobago Cays!), and Val spoiled us with the most amazing meals she produced with a lot of love and creativity in the tiny galley on board Katlyn.
The week we spent on board exceeded all (already high) expectations, and we were literally in tears when we had to leave much too soon.
